The GFS model

The Global Forecast System is one of two primary weather models produced at the National Center of American Research. The GFS has a lower resolution but a worldwide scope. As a result, it does much better in the long term than other domestic models, and conceptualizes weather phenomena moving from overseas more effectively. It struggles in short time frames, with more discrete precipitation patterns, or smaller scale features that develop over the US.
