Lansing, Michigan

All right, finally, I’m back with a forecast. We’ll be headed to the state capital of Michigan for today’s forecast. They were buffeted by snow and wind at the north end of the same system that brought tornadoes to the New Orleans area. How long until things clear out?

At 206PM, ET, Lansing was reporting overcast skies and a temperature of 28 degrees. Most of northern Michigan had cleared out, leaving the overcast for the southern part of the state. It was seasonably cool, stabilized by the clouds, as Michigan was within a sharp trough moving quickly through the Great Lakes. This trough is expected to generate a new area of low pressure overnight, one that will explode in the central Appalachians. A resultant flow over the Great Lakes may introduce more clouds and even some light snow to the region overnight.
A vast ridge will be moving into the center of the country through the day on Thursday, and will be in place fr Friday. Unfortunately for residents of Lansing, a robust little clipper will be riding the northern fringe of this feature. Precipitation will be much more significant in the UP, and where the Great Lakes can enhance things in lower Michigan, particularly around the Mackinac, but the southern fringe of the feature will likely reach Lansing. With the advancing warm air, there is a danger that some of the falling precipitation will arrive as sleet and make things icy for a brief time on Friday night. Fortunately, the warm up will continue, and this will not be a long term issue.

Some clouds lingering over southern Michigan, even 5 hours after I started this forecast. These are a real help though, otherwise it would be very chilly tonight.
