Spartanburg, South Carolina

It’s not often that we are looking at a site in the teeth of a pending strong system, but here we are, looking at a Spartanburg with some nastiness on the way.

At 855PM, ET, Spartanburg was reporting a temperature of 28 degrees with overcast skies. The chill encompassing the region is a result of a ridge of high pressure over the mid Atlantic cycling unseasonably cool air to the south. Aloft, a sharp Arctc trough is sinking south in a bid to merge with a broader southern trough. The southern trough is helping to generate an off shore trough, which will generate a few showers off the Carolina coast tonight and through most of the day tomorrow.
By tomorrow afternoon, it will be the northern trough that will begin to draw attention to itself. A surface cyclone will begin to develop near Mississippi by midday tomorrow, and will continue to rapidly strengthen through the period. Because of the shortwave aloft associated with this development, it will move quickly eastward. By the end of the day tomorrow, expect some rain for the Piedmont as moisture gets drawn from the coastal trough. A cold front will reach the area in the predawn hours of Tuesday, bringing a helacious round of heavy rain with some thunder. As the boundary clears town, some wet snow may potentially mix in with the rain. With clouds clearing, expect temperatures to jump on Tuesday, despite the recent passage of a very active cold front. A blob of precipitation is expected to chase the primary feature out of town while associated with an inverted trough sliding through the Ohio Valley. Don’t be surprised if there is another round of light rain before midnight on Wednesday.

FIO: Tomorrow – Mixed precipitation throughout the day. High 40, Low 29

Looking pretty ugly out there. Whether or not they get any freezing rain will depend heavily on how fast it can warm up tomorrow. Here is the satellite, which is fairly docile so far.
